Red Cross Launches Safe in the Sound Preparedness Campaign
(Feb. 5, 2013) The American Red Cross Western Washington Chapters today launched Safe in the Sound, a three-year public awareness campaign to help individuals and communities prepare for every type of disaster.
With more than 4.5 million people in the Puget Sound area, the goal is to give at least one member of every household the knowledge, training and skills to respond to a disaster. Founding partner Puget Sound Energy’s contribution will help Safe in the Sound prepare individuals, communities and organizations for disasters. Whether it is an earthquake or an everyday disaster such as a home fire or medical emergency, Puget Sound area residents must be prepared for when, not if, the next crisis strikes.
Kimberly Harris, President and CEO of Puget Sound Energy, said safety and preparedness are priorities.
“In partnership with the American Red Cross, we support Safe in the Sound because we know it’s essential for individuals, families and communities to be prepared for emergencies,” Harris said. “Taking time now to prepare will keep us safe later.”
Every $1 invested in preparedness saves more than $6 in post-disaster recovery and response costs, yet less than 25 percent of Western Washington residents surveyed say they are actually prepared.
Randy Hutson, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross, said the need to prepare doesn’t stop at the edge of a neighborhood—everyone should take preparedness steps.
“Far too many people are simply not prepared for an emergency,” Hutson said. “We can work together to better prepare one another. Our region has the character, the nature and the demographics to effect a cultural change and place the emphasis back on preparedness. Your family can be the first to respond to this challenge.”
Public preparedness training sessions and grassroots volunteer efforts will be central to the success of the campaign. Programs and materials will be provided in several languages, with specific materials and events targeted at diverse populations which are traditionally less prepared for emergencies.
