Automated Benchmarking
The Energy Star Portfolio Manager is a free web-based tool offered by the EPA that allows building owners and operators to track and assess energy and water consumption of their buildings. Automated Benchmarking is a tool within Portfolio Manager that allows customers to have energy consumption data uploaded to their account from their utilities.
Upon request, PSE will upload 24 months of consumption data to your portfolio manager account for free. To use this service, complete the following steps:
Step 1 - Gather important information about your building
- All natural gas meter numbers* and electric meter numbers** (click image to enlarge)

* All natural gas meter numbers should be 9 digits; add leading zeros if necessary.
** All electric meters need to be 10 characters long. If your electric meter number is less than 10 characters, add leading zeroes between the last letter and first numbers. For example in the photo above, the meter number (U93448711) will need to be entered as U093448711.
- The last four digits for the accounts associated with those meters as shown in the partial bill sample below:

Step 2 - Log into Energy Star's Portfolio Manager using your account
- If you do not already have an account, you can set one up for free here.
Step 3 - Set up your building or buildings in your Portfolio Manager account and request consumption data from PSE
Step 4 - Download, complete and return the proper release forms to PSE.
- Customer Data Release form (only required if your building has four or less tenants that separately receive service from PSE to the building and have their own accounts with PSE).
Make sure forms are completely filled out with the appropriate signatures and contact information included!
Completed forms should be sent to PSE through one of the following methods:
- Email scanned copies to: automatedbenchmarking@pse.com
- Fax: 425-462-3418
- Mail:

Step 5 - Log into your Portfolio Manager account to see if your data was uploaded.
After PSE is able to verify your information, our system will automatically upload 24 months of aggregated consumption to each building for which you requested data. This verification process typically takes from two to five days, depending on volume. If you are still not seeing data after five days, please contact us at automatedbenchmarking@pse.com.
Step 6 - Re-request data when updates are needed.
PSE only provides a one-time upload of the last 24 months of energy data into your Portfolio Manager account. When updated data is needed, you will need to re-request the usage data. Please follow these instructions.
A note for our Seattle customers:
Certain properties located in Seattle are required to report their energy consumption directly to the City of Seattle on an annual basis. For more information regarding reporting requirements, deadlines, and instructions, visit the City of Seattle’s Energy Disclosure webpage at http://www.seattle.gov/dpd/EnergyDisclosure. Customers located in Seattle will also need to contact Seattle City Light for an “Energy Usage Report” to obtain their electric consumption data.
