Conservation & Efficiency: Powerful Choices for the Environment

Teacher's guide and pre- and post- activities


The Teacher's Guide provides indepth information about the program and letter to parents regarding the information for the Powerful Choices for the Environment program.

Pre-Activities


This activity helps students understand the concept of an ecosystem by having them go outside to identify their own ecosystems.

This activity will activate students' prior knowledge about the topics to be studied this week


Post-activities

These activities come from the National Energy Education and Development Project (NEED). The mission of the NEED Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. Fossil Fuels to Products

Covers the exploration, production, refining, chemical manufacturing, transportation, marketing, and uses of petroleum and its products in the industrial sector with background information and hands-on activities. (Grades 6-12)

Energy Infobooks provide background information on a number of energy topics and sources. Infobook activities have been developed to reinforce the information in the Infobooks.

Transportation Fuels Debate Game

Students evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of conventional and alternative transportation fuels in an innovative debate format.

Energy Conservation Contract

Students learn about saving energy by encouraging their families to conserve.

Energy House

Students learn about energy conservation and efficiency by using various materials to insulate a cardboard house.

Energy Analysis

Students use graphs of historical data and research historical and societal events to determine and analyze trends in energy.

This booklet includes a series of charting and graphing activities in which students evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the major energy sources.

Use this guide to help students create an Energy Carnival for the classroom, school or community.

Exploring Energy:

Use these hands-on activities to explore relevant energy topics with upper elementary students.

Mission Possible Energy Trade-Offs:

Students work in groups to develop an energy plan to provide more electricity for a growing country.

Museum of Solid Waste and Energy:

Students explore the relationship between trash and energy by constructing and presenting exhibits on different aspects of solid waste including recycling, source reduction, landfilling, and waste-to-energy plants.
