Puget Sound Energy built a new substation in Jefferson County near Chimacum – the first new substation in the area in more than 20 years. The substation is located approximately 1,000 feet north of the intersection of Chimacum Road and State Route 19.

Previously, Chimacum and the surrounding areas were served by highly-loaded distribution circuits from the Irondale and Port Ludlow substations. The new substation provides the area with long-term capacity and reliability and will help reduce power outages. Customers in Port Hadlock and Chimacum and on Beaver Valley Rd., Rhody Dr., Anderson Lake Rd., and those along the way to Marrowstone Island benefit the most from this upgrade.

What is a substation?

Substations are critical links in the electricity distribution system, containing utility circuit protection, voltage regulation, and equipment that steps down higher voltage to lower voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, power is routed through our transmission system to a substation where it is changed to a lower voltage that can be utilized by customers.
