Project overview
Kingston substation
To improve electrical system reliability and meet the growing needs of our customers in the Hansville and Kingston communities, PSE built a new substation on Hansville Road NE just north of State Route 104. The new capacity of 110 megawatts (MW) from 80 MW will increase reliability and meet growth of the North Kitsap area for years to come. Nearly 7,000 PSE customers will benefit from the new substation relieving the area’s electric load currently served from our Port Gamble and Miller Bay substations. The substation also eliminates the need for supplemental energy from a portable diesel generator that had been used to supply peak power needs to the area the past three winters. In addition to the substation, the project included construction of 4 miles of new 115 kilovolt transmission line from PSE’s Miller Bay substation located at the intersection of NE Gunderson Road and Miller Bay Road NE north along Miller Bay Road NE and Hansville Road NE to the new substation.
What is a substation?
Substations are critical links in the electricity distribution system that switch, change or regulate electric voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, the high voltage power flows through substations, which transform it to lower voltages.
Committed to keeping you informed
PSE will continue to provide updates to the community. We will notify residents who live near the project area when construction will occur. We aim to complete the work with as little disruption as possible.
