Project overview
PSE is upgrading our natural gas system in Snohomish and North King counties to meet our customers’ current and future needs. We are working to install a new natural gas heater at our North Seattle town border station located east of I-5 and south of the SR 405 junction in unincorporated Lynnwood. The heater is needed to ensure the continuation of uninterrupted service to existing customers and accommodate growing demand for natural gas in the area. We have operated our town border station on this site since 1967, which currently supplies roughly 20 percent of the natural gas in PSE's five-county natural gas service area.
Over the past few years icing problems have developed on the piping around the natural gas regulators located inside the station due to load growth. As the pressure of natural gas is reduced, it cools. Excessive cooling can lead to operational problems including a build-up of ice on the pipe and other station components. The accumulation of ice can make it difficult to operate and maintain pipes, valves, controls, and instruments.
What is a town border station?
A town border station is a natural gas facility that transitions the natural gas from an interstate transmission pipeline to the local distribution company. Williams Northwest Pipeline is the interstate transmission company that delivers natural gas to PSE at our North Seattle town border station, where we then reduce the pressure of the natural gas to deliver it to our customers through our distribution system.
How does natural gas get to my home or business?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed almost entirely of methane. Interstate pipelines transport natural gas to regional natural gas systems, where it is metered and delivered through a network of local mains, service lines and, ultimately, to customer homes and businesses. Natural gas provides 13 percent of the state's energy.
Committed to keeping you informed
PSE will continue to provide updates to the community. We will notify residents who live near the project area when construction will occur. It is our aim to complete work with as little disruption as possible.
