Puget Sound Energy substation and transmission line project

East Port Orchard to Manchester transmission line and substation project

Fall 2009 project update
  • Puget Sound Energy expects to begin seeking permits by late fall 2009
  • Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2010 and be completed by November 2010
Project overview

PSE is building a new transmission line between our East Port Orchard and Manchester substations to increase system reliability and meet growing customer demand for power in the Port Orchard area.

Connecting the two substations will increase electrical system reliability and allow for better use of existing capacity. Currently our Manchester substation is served radially, which means it is served by one transmission line. The addition of the new transmission line will create a “loop,” which means the substation will be fed by two transmission lines. Once complete, if one line goes out, the other line will continue to provide power to our substation and customers in the area.

In addition to the new transmission line, we will modify our East Port Orchard substation to include one 25 megavolt amperes (MVA) transformer and have the space to add a second 25 MVA transformer. This will allow PSE to double the capacity in the future without changing the substation footprint or building additional substations in the immediate area.

What is a transmission line?

Transmission lines are key elements in the electrical distribution system. The lines safely transport high voltage electricity from power generation sources like dams and wind farms to substations in local communities. Transmission normally takes place at voltages of 55 kV and higher.

What is a substation?

Substations are critical links in the electrical distribution system, containing utility circuit protection, voltage regulation, and equipment that steps down higher voltage to lower voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, power is routed through our transmission system to a substation where it is changed to a lower voltage that can be utilized by customers in their homes and businesses.

Committed to keeping you informed

PSE will continue to provide updates to the community. We will notify residents who live near the project area when construction will occur. It is our aim to complete the work with as little disruption as possible.
