Summer 2009 project completion
- PSE completed the $9.7 million installation and construction of the new Bremerton substation in Kitsap County
- The new substation came online on July 1, 2009
Project overview
Puget Sound Energy rebuilt the aging electric distribution substation located at 840 10th Street, east of Warren Avenue in Bremerton. The new substation, which remains at the same location, can now accommodate current and future energy needs of the growing Bremerton area. The substation was designed to blend in with the neighborhood, incorporating a mural of local historical scenes.
The project included demolishing the existing substation, and rebuilding and upgrading the facility. The old substation was among the oldest substations in our service territory. The 40 Megavolt Amperes (MVA) transformer was replaced with two standard 25 MVA transformers. In addition, the design encompasses room for a third 25 MVA transformer for future expansion inside the footprint of the substation. The upgrade in equipment gives the area long-term capacity, reliability and will help reduce future power outages.
What is a substation?
Substations are critical links in the electricity distribution system, containing utility circuit protection, voltage regulation, and equipment that steps down higher voltage to lower voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, power is routed through our transmission system to a substation where it is changed to a lower voltage that can be utilized by customers.
