Puget Sound Energy natural gas pipeline project

Frederickson - South Tacoma

Winter 2008 project completed
  • PSE completed construction of the new 16-inch natural gas line on Dec. 14, 2008
  • The new natural gas pipeline cost $15 million

Project overview

We have upgraded our natural gas system in the South Tacoma area by installing five and a quarter miles of 16-inch natural gas line from our existing Frederickson natural gas station to our new Clover Creek limit station at 128th Street East and Waller Road.

The natural gas system in South Tacoma had reached its capacity. The new line increases our natural gas system's reliability, as well as accommodates current and future growth in west Pierce County and surrounding areas. PSE's natural gas system works as a large network; any main line upgrade helps stabilize the system in adjacent communities as well as the entire geographic area.

Gate and Limit Stations

Gate and limit stations are devices in our natural gas transmission and distribution system that regulate the pressure of the natural gas. Specifically they decrease the pressure of the natural gas for use in residences and business.

How does natural gas get to my home or business?

Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed almost entirely of methane. Interstate pipelines transport natural gas to regional natural gas systems, where it is metered and delivered through a network of local mains, service lines and, ultimately, to customer homes and businesses. Natural gas provides 13 percent of the state's energy.
