Puget Sound Energy substation project

Blackburn substation

Fall 2009 project updates
  • Puget Sound Energy held community meeting on Sept. 15, 2009
  • We have updated and corrected our project map
  • We are currently in the design phase
  • Construction is expected to begin in 2010

Project overview

PSE is working to upgrade our electric system in the Mount Vernon area with our new Blackburn electric distribution substation (formerly known as the Eaglemont substation) The new substation will improve reliability and increase capacity for our customers in the east and south areas of Mount Vernon. Located at 1218 E. Blackburn Road in Mount Vernon, the new substation will include one 25 megavolt amperes (MVA) transformer with the space to add a second 25 MVA transformer as needed. This will allow PSE to double the substation’s capacity in the future without changing the substation footprint.

What is a substation?

Substations are critical links in the electricity distribution system, containing utility circuit protection, voltage regulation, and equipment that steps down higher voltage to lower voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, power is routed through our transmission system to a substation where it is changed to a lower voltage that can be utilized by customers.

Committed to keeping you informed

PSE will continue to provide updates to the community. We will notify residents who live near the project area when construction will occur. It is our aim to complete the work with as little disruption as possible.
