Top 10 clean energy highlights for 2023

For 150 years, Puget Sound Energy has fueled the growth of local communities in one of the most innovative regions in the world.

We’re undergoing one of the most significant transformations in our history as we strive to meet Washington state’s clean energy laws, while continuing to deliver the safe, reliable and affordable energy our customers expect.

Here’s a look back at the top 10 highlights from our clean energy journey in 2023:

  1.  We’re aggressively pursuing renewable energy resources, from large generation projects to energy produced locally in our neighborhoods and communities. We’re targeting 60% clean electricity by 2025, nearly double our portfolio from 2020. Learn more.

  2.  In 2023, we announced that we are adding new clean energy resources to our portfolio, including the development of the Beaver Creek wind farm in Montana that will generate around 248 MW of energy, enough to power about 83,000 homes a year. Since 2021, we have contracted nearly 2,300 MW from clean energy sources. Learn more.

  3.  Our Community Solar program has grown to six sites generating roughly 16MW of solar energy. The program has given nearly 4,000 customers access to renewable energy generated within their communities. Learn more.

  4.  We started providing the Port of Seattle with Renewable Natural Gas, helping them progress toward their own sustainability goals. Learn more.

  5.  We’re collaborating with our customers to meet rising demand through new programs. We launched demand response programs called PSE Flex, which offers incentives to reduce strain on the grid during periods of peak demand. Learn more.

  6.  We’ve made it easier for drivers to go electric by constructing six public charging stations so far, as well as installing chargers at over 70 workplaces, multifamily properties and community organizations. Learn more.

  7.  We launched a targeted electrification pilot to help customers take advantage of newer technologies such as high-efficiency electric heat pumps, that can provide energy savings and lower their carbon footprint. Learn more.

  8.  We were recognized as a national leader for our Clean Buildings Accelerator program and Virtual Power Plant. Learn more.

  9.  We’re also exploring new clean energy technologies to help us meet our ambitious goals. We’re supporting a small modular nuclear reactor feasibility study in the region, developing a long duration energy storage pilot, and are actively participating in the development of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub. Learn more.

  10.  We continue to center equity in our clean energy transformation and have launched new programs to help customers with their bills and make renewable energy more accessible. Learn more.
