Jackson Prairie Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility
PSE co-owns and operates the Pacific Northwest's largest natural-gas storage facility, called Jackson Prairie. The 3,200-acre, underground reservoir in Lewis County, Wash., currently can hold about 44 billion cubic feet of natural gas. PSE also stores up to 13.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas in Questar’s Clay Basin underground facility, in northeast Utah.

Jackson Prairie natural gas dehydrators
First opened in 1970, Jackson Prairie’s stored reserves today can meet up to 25 percent of the Pacific Northwest’s peak natural gas demand on our coldest winter days. Natural gas from Canada and U.S. Rocky Mountains states is injected into the facility’s underground aquifers mainly in summer months (when wholesale natural gas prices tend to be lower), and is withdrawn mainly in winter (when natural gas prices tend to be highest). In this way, Jackson Prairie’s gas reserves – safely stored 1,000 to 3,000 feet beneath the surface – not only help to ensure reliable natural gas service for homes and businesses, but also moderate gas prices for consumers.
