PSE recognizes top energy-efficiency contractors

Energy Efficiency Action Award honors leading local businesses

BELLEVUE, Wash. (May 27, 2008) – Puget Sound Energy (PSE) last week honored three local contractors with the utility’s first-ever Energy Efficiency Action Award. The award was given to the top professionals who install the heating, cooling and water heating equipment supported by PSE residential rebate and incentive programs.

“Energy efficiency is too big a job for PSE to do it alone,” said Cal Shirley, vice president of Energy Efficiency Services for PSE. “Our local contractors are a key part of helping this region conserve natural gas and electricity, and they offer a tremendous resource for both the utility and our residential customers.”

Recipients of the Energy Efficiency Action Award are:
  • Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning, Seattle
  • Sunset Air Inc., Lacey
  • Washington Energy Services, Seattle

Each earned the distinction for their outstanding performance in helping residential customers save natural gas and electricity. The three companies completed the highest number of residential high-efficiency equipment installations in PSE’s service territory. Together, the three contractors installed 25 percent of the total rebates under the high-efficiency furnace, water heater and heat pump residential retrofit programs. In all, the award-winning contractors performed nearly 2,000 retrofits in 2007.

Energy efficiency is a vital part of the utility’s strategy to meet increasing energy demands in the growing Puget Sound region and protect the environment, with the target of displacing 53.3 average megawatts (aMW) of generation and 5.3 million therms of natural gas over the next two years. Using PSE incentives, PSE customers during the past five years have more than doubled their annual electricity savings and more than tripled their natural gas savings.

Since 1979, PSE programs have reduced customers’ ongoing power usage by about 222 aMW – enough to serve the electricity needs of nearly 170,000 homes. PSE’s current plans would save enough energy over the next 20 years to supply electricity to all the residences in Seattle, Bellevue, Bellingham, and Olympia combined, and negate the need for building two additional mid-sized, 250-MW power plants.
