While state and federal maintenance requirements for natural-gas equipment are steadily increasing, PSE's construction and maintenance practices often go beyond regulators' required standards.
About 60 percent of PSE's existing network of natural-gas mains and service lines is made of durable, corrosion-resistant plastic piping. Most of the remaining pipe is coated steel equipped with cathodic protection – a method of inhibiting corrosion on steel pipe. The rest of PSE's natural-gas piping, a tiny percentage of the total, is in the process of being replaced with plastic pipe.
