Emergency ResponseElectric shocks
If someone receives an electrical shock:
- Stay clear. Do not touch the victim or the source of the electricity while current is flowing. Do not attempt to free the victim with a broom or other object as the object could conduct electricity.
- Call 911 for immediate medical treatment.
- Turn off all power if this can be done quickly and safely. If the source of the current is a fallen power line, stay at least 30 feet away, and call PSE Customer Service at 1-888-225-5773.Once the victim is no longer in contact with electrical current, determine what first aid steps to take.
- If the victim is not breathing, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- If the victim's face is pale, raise the feet; if the face is red, keep the head raised.
- Cover the victim with a blanket and keep them warm.
