PSE strengthens grid for stormy weather, urges customers to prepare as clocks fall back
Year-round maintenance and grid modernization help reduce outages when severe weather hits

Bellevue, Washington (02.11.2026) Fall is firmly underway, winter is on our horizon and it’s time to set back your clocks. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is encouraging customers to take steps now to prepare for cold temperatures, storms and emergencies.

From strong windstorms and heavy rainfall to freezing temperatures and snow, Pacific Northwest Weather can create challenges for homes, roads and the electric grid. Fall and winter are also good times to explore ways to increase home energy efficiency and manage energy costs. PSE offers rebates on qualifying energy-efficient appliances and home upgrades, as well as bill assistance programs for eligible customers.

Customers can learn more about available rebates at pse.com/rebates and see whether they qualify for assistance programs at PSE.com/GetHelp. Customers interested in saving money through saving energy can check out our demand response programs at PSE.com/flex.

“As we prepare for winter, our teams are ready to respond when weather-related outages occur,” said Ryan Murphy, vice president of Gas and Electric Operations. “Investments in maintenance, vegetation management, grid modernization and infrastructure upgrades are helping us build a stronger, more resilient energy system for our customers.”

Although PSE works year-round to strengthen the grid and restore services as quickly, and safely, as possible following outages – severe weather can still cause interruptions. Depending on the extent of damage and weather conditions, some outages may last several hours or longer. Customers are encouraged to make a preparedness plan before storms arrive.

Storm preparedness essentials:
  • Stock emergency supplies for both home and vehicle use, including extra batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable food items
  • Ensure you have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available for emergency broadcasts
  • Charge all cell phones, portable battery packs, and mobile devices before storms arrive
  • Limit refrigerator and freezer access during outages – a closed refrigerator stays cold for up to 12 hours
  • Turn off lights and unplug appliances and sensitive electronics such as computers to prevent circuit overloads when service is restored. Leave one light on to signal when power returns
  • Download the myPSE app to track and report outages, monitor restoration progress, and receive estimated repair times, or visit pse.com/outagemap
  • Access additional preparation tips and power restoration information here.
Essential safety guidelines:
  • Never approach or touch downed power lines – stay at least 35 feet away as they may be energized. Contact PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 to report hazards. Find out what to do about downed lines here.
  • Never bring outdoor grills indoors for cooking. Do not use natural gas ranges for heating or charcoal as an indoor heat source, as these can cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning
  • If using a portable generator, follow all manufacturer safety instructions carefully. Never operate generators indoors or in enclosed spaces to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
  • When using portable heaters, maintain safe distances from furniture, drapes, and other flammable materials
  • Always rely on flashlights rather than candles for emergency lighting
