Learn more about ultra-efficient heat pump clothes dryers

  • What is a heat pump clothes dryer?

A heat pump dryer is an energy-efficient type of clothes dryer that uses heat pump technology to dry clothing with significantly less energy than traditional electric dryers. It continuously recycles and reuses hot air instead of venting it outside your home. It is the most energy-efficient style of dryer available and will reduce your energy use and electricity bill.

  • How is a heat pump clothes dryer different from a traditional electric dryer?
    • Heat generation – Heat pump dryers recycle hot air through a heat pump system, while conventional electric dryers pull in air from the room and send used warm air outside. Keeping the hot air looping through the dryer instead of sending it outside your home saves energy.
    • No external venting needed – Since a heat pump dryer reuses the hot air created, they don’t require any vents to the outside of your home. This means you don’t need to clean out dryer vents to help reduce fire risk.
    • Operating temperatures – Heat pump dryers can use a lower temperature to dryer your clothes effectively, saving on energy use and cost with each and every load.
  • What are the pros of a heat pump dryer versus a traditional electric dryer?
    • Heat pump dryers use 40-50% less energy, saving you money with every load
    • Heat pump dryers are gentler on your clothes since they use lower temperatures when running. This reduces wear on your cloths and shrinking that can occur due to the higher temperatures of traditional electric dryers.
  • What should you think about before installing a heat pump clothes dryer?
    • No external venting needed – You wont need the external vent to the outside of your home.
    • Water management – You may need to plan for either a water collection tanks that requires regular emptying (some models come with this built in). Or you may use a drain that is already in your laundry room.
    • Space and placement – Heat pump dryers provide more flexibility in placement since you don’t need to worry about the ventilation tubing.
    • Maintenance access – You will want to ensure there is adequate spacing around the heat pump dryer to ensure access to the water collection system (based on make and model of dryer).
