Fall back into storm preparedness and energy efficiency
PSE offers tips for the end of Daylight Saving Time

Bellevue, Washington (10/30/2025) As we "fall back" and set our clocks back one hour, the shorter days and cooler temperatures signal the arrival of fall storm season. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) reminds customers now is the perfect time to prepare for winter weather while exploring ways to make homes more energy efficient.

Fall and winter storms in the Pacific Northwest can bring powerful winds, heavy rain, and occasional snow, all of which can impact electrical service. PSE's grid operations teams and field crews are fully prepared and on standby to respond swiftly and safely when severe weather strikes our region.

"As we head into the winter, our Operations teams are ready to spring into action whenever outages occur," said Director of Electrical Operations Ryan Murphy. "Our year-round infrastructure investments ensure we are entering these challenging months with a resilient and reliable energy system. Our strategic grid hardening initiatives target proactive maintenance and repairs of our overhead and underground infrastructure, a robust vegetation management program, as well as the ongoing growth and expansion of grid modernizing technology within real-time operations. Along with strategic grid hardening initiatives, we're continuously working to enhance system reliability for our customers."

Storm-related outages are a reality during fall and winter months. While our crews work to restore power as quickly as possible, some outages may last several hours depending on the extent of damage and safety conditions. PSE strongly encourages customers to prepare their homes now for the storm season ahead.

Storm preparedness essentials:

  • Stock emergency supplies for both home and vehicle use, including extra batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable food items
  • Ensure you have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available for emergency broadcasts
  • Charge all cell phones, portable battery packs, and mobile devices before storms arrive
  • Limit refrigerator and freezer access during outages – a closed refrigerator stays cold for up to 12 hours
  • Turn off lights and unplug appliances and sensitive electronics such as computers to prevent circuit overloads when service is restored. Leave one light on to signal when power returns
  • Download the myPSE app to track and report outages, monitor restoration progress, and receive estimated repair times, or visit pse.com/outagemap

Essential safety guidelines:

  • Never approach or touch downed power lines – stay at least 35 feet away as they may be energized. Contact PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 to report hazards. Find out what to do about downed lines here.
  • Never bring outdoor grills indoors for cooking. Do not use natural gas ranges for heating or charcoal as an indoor heat source, as these can cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning
  • If you use a portable generator, follow all manufacturer safety instructions carefully. Never operate generators indoors or in enclosed spaces to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
  • When using portable heaters, maintain safe distances from furniture, drapes, and other flammable materials
  • Always rely on flashlights rather than candles for emergency lighting

Whether you're planning home improvements or simply looking to reduce energy costs this winter, take advantage of PSE's rebates and incentives for energy efficiency upgrades. The more efficient your home becomes, the more you can save on your energy bills. Explore options at pse.com/lower.
