PSE’s DuPont natural gas pipe remediation program

Program overview

PSE’s DuPont Program is a 20-year initiative (2013-2032) to remediate approximately 435 miles of leak prone plastic pipe across our natural gas system. This specific type of pipe, manufactured by DuPont and installed by utilities nationwide in the 1970s and early 1980s, is susceptible to slow-growing cracks over time and under certain conditions. Based on company and industry experience, PSE is proactively addressing DuPont pipe in our service area.

Our proactive approach

To eliminate this known risk, PSE is proactively remediating DuPont pipe before cracks and leaks can occur. Remediation activities typically include either replacing or retiring the pipe. We are prioritizing locations for this work based on risk assessments determined through our Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP), which has been reviewed and approved by the Washington Utilities & Transportation Commission (WUTC).

In areas where DuPont pipe remains for now, we are proactively monitoring pipe condition through regular inspections and leak surveys until remediation occurs.

Benefits for customers and communities

Replacing older pipe with superior, modern materials provides long-lasting benefits:

  • Proactively eliminates the risk of cracks before leaks can occur
  • Reduces likelihood of emergency repairs and service disruptions
  • Ensures continued reliable natural gas service for your community

Program progress & timeline

PSE’s DuPont Program has been in place since 2013. We started with 435 miles of pipe and, by the beginning of 2026, have remediated 265 total miles. We plan to finish by 2032.
