Advancing clean energy in Kitsap
PSE has made significant progress increasing clean energy for Kitsap customers. The company has more than doubled the renewable energy in its system and expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 60% by the end of this year.
PSE helps customers participate directly in the clean energy transition through programs such as net metering, electric vehicle charging, battery storage, and solar energy initiatives. In Kitsap, PSE has provided nearly $1.5 million in solar-related grants to local organizations and more than $3 million in incentives for EV charging to customers in Kitsap, including almost $1 million awarded to projects through our new transportation emission reduction grant program that is funded by the state.
PSE is also helping Washington State Ferries move toward cleaner transportation by supporting the electrification of ferry terminals in Kitsap. We are working with WSF on projects at Bainbridge Island, Bremerton and Kingston that would provide the dedicated power and infrastructure needed for future electric ferry service.
Investing in Kitsap communities
PSE is committed to being a strong community partner throughout Kitsap, regularly working alongside local nonprofits serving critical needs. We invest in local organizations that build solutions for housing, human services, youth development, and environmental stewardship throughout the year.
PSE prioritizes our working relationship with first responders, including ongoing collaboration with the Kitsap County Fire Training Consortium through our annual “Wildfire – Prepare & Prevent” initiative providing funds to train the approximately 500 firefighters across Kitsap County. We ensure awareness of our wildfire risk mitigation, partner with entities like Bainbridge Prepares and Kitsap Search Dogs, and we participate in safety and emergency preparedness events such as the Day of Preparedness and Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue’s Kids Day.
Strengthening Kitsap’s energy system
PSE plans to invest nearly $100 million in Kitsap’s electric system through 2029 to reduce outage frequency and duration, strengthen the system against wildfire and other extreme weather, and prepare the grid for future growth and emerging technologies.
For customers, this means rebuilding or upgrading electric lines that serve your home or business, converting overhead lines underground, installing stronger specially coated “tree wire” in areas with higher wildfire risk, adding new circuits and capacity to accommodate growth, and creating more flexibility to reroute power during outages. Reliability focused projects represent the largest share of the planned work, with additional investments focused on wildfire mitigation, capacity, grid modernization and replacing aging infrastructure.
We also have larger system improvement projects underway on Bainbridge Island and in the West Sound. Major projects completed include upgraded substations in South Bremerton and Port Madison and transmission upgrades in North and South Kitsap. These projects help us meet Kitsap’s growing demand while also providing greater redundancy on our system when outages occur.
